A man who goes by "I" waits for the bus to arrive. "I" grew up in Ohio and currently lives in Jacksonville and hates it. He hates the crime and atmosphere of the city and as a vegan finds it very hard to find good places to eat. He was a very interesting guy to get to talk with.

These photos were taken in or near Jacksonville, Florida with my Leica M6. It has been a lot of fun to shoot film again and really love the quality of the images produced from my camera. I would like to thank my mom's good friend Mahabba Arthur who was kind enough to give me this camera, a 35mm, 50mm, and 90mm lens. I am so glad I am finally putting it to good use.

Today in my outdoor education class we had a raptor (bird of prey) presentation. In this photo a Barred Owl attempted to take a nip at the handlers finger when he explained that the bird is actually quite small and that the feathers are deceiving.

Tristan Brenner (above three) is seen in the various stages to coaxing the mother cow into the barn for milking. The cow was not cooperative and Brenner and several other workers had to get creative in order to get the mother into the stalls.

Well I am back out at Plantation Farm camp for the summer and I am absolutely love it. From the people, to the atmosphere of the entire farm, I feel at home. We have been working nonstop and very diligently to set up the farm and just as today ended we got a little surprise. Everyone, meet J-Hamburger, our newest calf and part of the family for the summer.

A Visit to the German Tourist Club

Today I went to a really cool place in Marin, California that is called the German Tourists Club. After hiking for about an hour we came to this courtyard and German style houses where people were just hanging out and drinking. It was a pretty interesting place.

This past weekend was the Cambodian new year. Hundreds of Cambodians and several monks came from all over the neighboring states to celebrate here in Bowling Green.

I was recently fortunate enough to be accepted to go on a trip to Israel through a program called Birthright. It is an amazing program that sends American Jews (ages 18-26) to Israel for almost 2 weeks. I went into the trip without any expectations and didn't know what kind of people i would meet. Mainly i was just excited to see and photograph somewhere that is so important to so many people. Jerusalem is the center of religion and a place with history that is so important to everyone. The trip was a life changing experience and the people a met while there helped make it so amazing. I want to thank everyone who made the trip possible and all the people who went with me.
I also like the pretend that this man who owns a small pizza shop is screaming ISRAEL! and so i am opening my posts with that.

A New Community, A New Story

I recently stumbled upon a newly developed Cambodian Buddhist community in Bowling Green. Originally i was simply looking for a few good features but i think it will easily become a long term project. There is a lot to tell in this community especially about its owner Meay Pat who works seven days a week to support his family and also keep the temple running. More to come from this story.

Mountain Workshop 2010- Thomas Family Farm

Here are a few features at this family owned dairy farm in Elizabethtown. Whenever i had free time and couldn't be shooting my assigned story i was shooting this small side project. The Thomas farm has been around for generations and is now in danger of closure, as with many small farms. It is a small town family that is first hand experiencing a national problem. They were extremely open to me being there and shooting and letting me experience the way they live. For that i want to thank them as well.

I had the opportunity during my story on Lorinda Jones, to also photograph her husband, Jerry Jones. This family took me in so openly into their quiet life and allowed me to see how they live. It isn't an easy thing to have a photojournalist around for nearly a whole week nonstop, but they were great. So thanks to Jerry and Lorinda.

My time there was such an incredible learning experience and i feel like i have a whole new outlook on everything i am doing as a photojournalist. This fall break i took a road trip with my brother David to visit my Mom at her home in Warfordsburg, Pennsylvania. Most of the photos were taken on the farm that she lives on. It is a beautiful community farm that has been a nice place to escape from reality... and yes, the small smokehouse/shack is my mom's house.

Plantation Farm Camp

These top two photos are from Cultural Heritage day at Fort Ross in Northern California. We took a group of campers on a day trip to see it.

I worked this all summer at a camp in Northern California called Plantation Farm Camp. It was on e of the best experiences of my life. The people and the atmosphere of the camp made me feel at home and more like myself than i had in a long time. I hope this shows in my photos.

These are just few images from my two days in California. I am working at a summer camp call Plantation Farm Camp. So far we have just been working hard and setting converting the farm into what will be the camp. This part of California is amazing and i can't wait to get camp started.

The Beginning of Summer

Ahmad DeOliveria of Portugal is the lead gardener for the farm. He is currently working to expand their half acre garden to almost two full acres.

I have Always enjoyed catching and photographing snakes. I was lucky enough to catch this Black Rat Snake after he almost had an unfortunate run in with the mower.

I am currently visiting my mom where she works and lives on the Sufi community farm in Pennsylvania. It is a working community farm for people who follow Sufism, a sect of Islam. I am meeting so many amazing people, i just don't have enough time to photograph them all. This area of the country is amazing and i hope to be able to come back very soon.

I will be posting more singles soon, enjoy these few diptychs that i have been playing around with.

Wayne Adams, 48, comes from a family of coal miners in Isom, KY. He has lived in the same Holler his whole life. Adams began practicing taxidermy in 1981 and has had a love for it ever since. As a coal miner Adams said "I guess if i hadn't enjoyed it, i wouldn't still be doin' it. But around here thats the only job that pays anything." He works the 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. shift in the mines and spends as much of his day as he can on his side job, taxidermy.

Alan Adams places a UK sticker to his truck. Previously a drug addict, Adams said " I used to be addicted to drugs, but now god saved me. He has been clean for several years and is thankful for he life he has now. (slightly cropped, click for full image).

Raymond Jent is a native of Whitesburg, ky. He is 63 years-old and a retired coal mine electrician.

Bernie Johnson, a member of the Boars Club of Whitesburg, Ky, takes a drag of a cigarette while taking with other members.

Jeanette Bentley of Letcher County, Kentucky, stands on her front porch. Bentley relies on coal as her main source of heat, but hates mountain top removal. She said her water has not been contaminated and "can't afford that city water." Bentley has and will continue to gather her water from an uphill stream. She has worked in the mines and is now retired but she said "them old hands has been through it all."

Truck driver Al Goodwin overturned his truck in order to avoid a collision on highway U.S. 119, in Letcher County, Kentucky. No one was injured in the accident and after several hours the truck was re-set upright.

Fight Night

I just liked this first one in color better, i realize its not the most consistent. Oh well.

I went to shoot WKU's Fight Night to get a few shots for my sports portfolio and what i got was a bit more. When i looked at my take i realized that i accidently followed Kyle Dahl, a 19 year-old sophomore at western, from start to finish. This ended up making a story that i am fairly happy with given that i didn't try to make it.

This is my First Photo Story in my picture stories class plus a few that didn't originally make the cut that i liked. The story is about Nermin Klapic, a 26 year-old Imam from Tulza, Bosnia. Struggling to keep attendance in the younger bosnian generation, Klapic is trying to find ways to keep them interested. Also, while their new mosque is in the beginning stages of construction, they must worship out of a fixed up garage.

Merrit Blow

Merritt Blow is soon to reach his 101st birthday on January 10th. Born in 1909, He has lived through the Great Depression, World Wars, and the majority of important historical events of the past 100 years that i have only read about in text books. He lost everything in the great depression which forced him to take any job that was available in order to get by. "The depression didn't stop for me" Blow said. He worked as painter, construction worker, waiter, florist, milk man and many other odd jobs. "Me and my friends that were in the same situation would all scrimp together enough money each week to buy a single pack of cigarettes. We would all stand around in a circle and smoke each one as far down as it would go. But that one pack had to get us through to next week." Blow said.
There is so much more to tell about Merritt Blow but here is a series i shot of him with a few hats from his collection.

Douglas Loop Art Fair

Tasiir displays a work in progress that he created at the art festival so that people could watch him work.

Braylyn Stewart sits with several of the graffiti pieces he has made. He and Tasiir often collaborate on pieces. "it's not just spray painting, every line is strategically placed and thought out" Stewart said.

A spray paint artist by the name of Tasiir displays art for sale at the Douglas Loop Art Fair in Louisville.

These pictures are from a few months ago but seeing as i am new to this whole blog thing i figured i might as well add more than just one picture today. I hope to update this regularly now that i have started it with more daily pictures.
